I don’t know what’s going on this year but I’ve been strangely enjoying the cold weather more than I should be. By that I mean, I’ve actually liked wearing heavier layers and making it “cool girl winter” so to speak. I used to think winter was the most challenging season to show off your style but now I realize all you really need are some statement pieces and you’re good to go. In most cases, you can take basics to a new level just by styling it with the right pieces. Here are 4 ways to look stylish in winter with just basics!
1. Black Fringe Sweater with High-Gloss Rainboots.
I’m not sure about you but I’m guilty of repeating the same outfit days in a row during these months. I figured if that’s the case, might as well invest in some cool and chic sweaters to last me while I’m at it. First up – since you know how much I love wearing black – I got this really stylish black fringe sweater during boxing week and it’s been a staple in my winter closet ever since. As pictured above, I styled a completely all-black outfit and it’s anything but boring. This statement-making sweater paired with my quilted high-gloss rubber rain boots is a perfect way to look stylish this winter.
If black is your happy colour like it is for me, don’t be shy to mix up different textures to make the dark tone more interesting. I finished off the outfit with some gold and silver accessories – a gold necklace is a MUST – and a cool studded purse. Accessorizing can take any outfit to the next level. This all black everything look is great for going out when you want to stay warm but also look stylish. Just be careful not to wear rubber boots in colder than -5 weather though or else they’ll crack!
2. Long Wool Overcoat with Oversized Scarf.
We’ve been pretty blessed this winter with milder than usual temperatures that I’ve been taking advantage by wearing out my long overcoat whenever I can. As pictured above, a wool overcoat is pretty much an instant style upgrade that you can never really go wrong with. My favourite way to complete this cool girl winter look? With an oversized scarf and all black pieces of course. I just got this black and white gridded scarf and it’s the perfect size to break up my minimalist outfit. The scarf definitely makes this outfit. If you want to up your style game this winter, better stock up on some cool scarves – it’s not only to keep you warm, it can also completely change your outfit.
Lastly, make sure to have a chic purse to go with it. I just received this Auxiliary purse during Christmas and I’ve been rocking it non-stop. That’s because I can’t help but wear it all the time – it’s the perfect size and I absolutely love the subtle military look to it. I finished this outfit with a pair of leather pants and black suede booties, which has always been my usual go-to for an easy style fix. With a couple of key items, this look is very winter chic and made completely of just basics.
3. Oversized Animal Printed Cardigan with All-Black Look.
If I had to choose a favourite way to style myself this winter, it would probably be this one pictured above. I’ve been really feeling animal print for the past year and for good reason. It has a subtle edge to it that’s easy to impress and animal print is quite très chic for winter. What’s even better is when I found this dropped shoulder leopard-printed cardigan at Top Shop. How can anyone say no to a cozy oversized cardigan in animal print? I love cozy cardigans not only because of how comfy they are but they’re also great layering pieces that can help show off your style. Nothing’s really more stylish than an oversized cardigan paired with an all-black outfit.
With this outfit, I broke up the black a bit with my double-ring belt (see picture below) to match my other gold accents. I usually have a set of accessories I like pairing everything with for a certain period of time. In this case, I’ve been wearing the same rose gold watch and double chained necklace with every outfit as of late. The gold works well with the black and camel look that I have going on. I styled this outfit with my simple black leather winter boots.
4. Tie-Dye Sweater with Teddy Coat and Knee-High Boots.
Lastly, I recently got my this super cute tie-dye sweater from Amazon the Drop x Spread Fashion’s collection and have been wearing it non-stop. It was part of a 48hr capsule collection with limited pieces, which makes me really happy to know I was able to grab one of them. Since I can’t wear ripped jeans in the winter, the next best (and coolest) thing has to be tie-dye. It’s a nice twist to an otherwise plain sweater that gives you more of a stylish flair. I styled this oversized sweater with my black teddy coat and knee-high boots for a fun winter look. Generally, oversized on top is the best way to go when all else fails.
As well, I’m getting tired of wearing my heavy parka on the daily so a teddy coat makes me feel like spring is at least getting a bit closer. Not to mention, it actually keeps me warm too. I love wearing my knee-highs over my leather pants with any outfit generally. The suede stands out so well against the leather, it’s an easy style upgrade to any outfit. I definitely feel all kinds of cool girl winter in this tie-dye and black ensemble. Who says winter wear has to be boring? It’s been so easy to look stylish in winter with just basics – you just need the right ones and the styling possibilities are endless.

Hey I really love the teddy jacket on you! It looks so amazing. I remember I wanted to get one but it was all sold out. I really love the outfits you chose to keep stylish for this cold weather. Can’t wait to see your spring style soon.
Thanks so much! The teddy coat is definitely one of my favourite jackets! So warm and cozy. They should be on sale now that winter’s coming to an end. The thing I love about it the most is that you can wear it right into spring as well!
