I know we’re living in the age where lash extensions are all the rage but for us normal people, mascara is one of the most important steps in our makeup routine. A good mascara will open up your eyes by lengthening your lashes while building volume and adding the perfect amount of lift. Since I’ve given up on eyelash curlers for the time being (they always clump up my lashes), I solely rely on an amazing mascara product to do all three for me. I have been told that I have naturally long lashes but they’re super thin and straight that they barely show up without some help. I’ve tried many mascaras over the years and from what I’ve experienced so far, it’s extremely difficult to find a mascara that will meet all three requirements. However, my following top 5 list comes pretty close so here’s a countdown of my favourite mascaras that are MichellesInStyle approved!
5. Tarte Gifted Mascara ($30)
Tarte makes some of my favourite makeup products that it’s no wonder that three of my top 5 on this list are from them. Coming in at number five, their Gifted mascara is known for their volumizing properties and I can definitely see my lashes thicken and lengthen with each brush stroke. I also love how my lashes don’t clump at all while using the soft bristles on this defining brush. However, all Tarte fans will know that what makes their products different is the Amazonian clay that is infused in many of their ingredients. The Gifted one, in particular, is made with Amazonian clay that has reparative properties, replenishing moisture to dry lashes and helping to strengthen them at the same time. This is a great mascara to use during the winter time when lashes need the most r&r time. Not only is it great in giving a voluminous look, but I also love using a product with ingredients that benefit my lash health. It’s a win-win.
Good for: Separating and replenishing moisture
4. Too Faced Better Than Sex ($31)
Too Faced products have always been known to produce very glam and flirty makeup looks. It should come as no surprise that their mascara also follows suit. The Better Than Sex mascara is unique in that it has an hourglass-shaped brush that gives an intense black and voluptuous look to my lashes. What attracted me to this mascara, initially (other than the name), was the sleek metallic pink casing it came in but the product actually works just as well as it looks. With a few easy strokes, my lashes really come to life, becoming full and lifted. I will say that the mascara does come on thick so my lashes are more prone to clumping because of it. However, I always have my lash brush handy to comb out any minor clumps. The carbon black mascara is also infused with collagen, which I can definitely see making a difference in the fullness of my lashes. I’d recommend this one for a sexy date night for a very dramatic makeup look.
Good for: Building volume and adding intensity
3. Tarte Lights, Camera, Splashes ($30)
Another Tarte mascara that I love, which also happens to be their best seller, is the Lights, Camera, Splashes waterproof mascara. I love using this as my everyday mascara as it easily volumizes, lengthens and curls my lashes while also conditioning them for better lash health. Known as a four-in-one, what I see most prominent in their formula is the extreme length they add to my lashes. It doesn’t, however, curl as well as the rest but what makes it one of the most appealing mascaras for me is that it’s waterproof. I find that a lot of my mascaras will start smudging over a prolonged period of time but this one stays put through sweat, tears or rain. It’s also a godsend when I’m at the beach or taking a dip in the pool that I don’t have to worry about looking like a raccoon if water ever gets splashed in my face. I have put it to the test and it does indeed hold up under water. It also comes infused with soothing and softening ingredients that allows me to take care of my lashes daily.
Good for: Lengthening and lasting wear
2. Benefit Bad Gal Lash ($27)
Undoubtedly, Benefit has come out with some amazing mascara products but out of everything that I’ve tried, nothing beats the original Bad Gal Lash. What I love most about this mascara is the big rounded brush that coats every little lash in its rich black formula. It amazingly lifts, lengthens and separates my lashes which eliminates any curling or combing I usually do afterward. The bristles feel like a gigantic cushion for my thin lashes, evenly fanning them out as I go. A lot of people turn to micro brushes for separated lashes but this mascara is surprisingly able to pick up even the smaller hairs without any clumping at all. I believe every girl should have this in her makeup bag. Out of all the mascaras, Bad Gal definitely gives off the most natural lift to your lashes – you could probably throw out your eyelash curler after this. Their famously big brush is definitely famous for a reason as you can expect noticeably longer and sexier lashes without any fuss. As they say, go big or go home.
Good for: Curling and separating lashes
1. Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes ($30)
Finally, at number one, my ultimate favourite mascara as of right now is Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Flashes. Although with a similar name to Lights, Camera, Splashes, it actually works quite differently – I like to think of it as the bolder and more extreme version of it. This mascara contains a triple black complex formula that not only lengthens lashes but also adds crazy volume like no other. What I love most is how they can make even the skinniest of lashes appear ten times fuller and more extravagant. The best way to use their duo-molded brush is to first, use the short-ended side for volume and then the long-bristled side for length and lift. After I’m done applying about two layers of this ultra-black mascara, I have dramatic eyes that give off an intense voluminous look. It’s perfect for a night out when you’re in the mood to sport a sultry eye. Some people do complain that it clumps up their lashes but I’ve been using it for years without any problems thus far. I might suggest not layering on the product as it does come on thick. If you’re like myself who values volume above all else in a mascara, this is definitely the one for you.
Good for: Building volume and lash fullness
