All About the Kimpton Saint George Hotel in Toronto

Kimpton Saint George Hotel Toronto one bedroom suite

This year was the first time in three years that most spring babies could finally celebrate their birthdays. Being a spring baby myself, I decided to book a staycation at the Kimpton Saint George Hotel right in the heart of downtown Toronto. Having severely missed the feeling of staying somewhere new, it only felt right to splurge on a room for my birthday. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of pampering yourself on a self-care trip in your home city. Here are the details from my one-night stay in this luxurious boutique hotel.

Staying at the Kimpton Saint George Hotel

The Kimpton is conveniently located in Yorkville, known best for its swanky five-star restaurants, high-end shops and more commonly, celebrity sightings. In contrast, the Kimpton Saint George Hotel felt like the cool older sister to everything in the area. I loved its quirky details mixed with with luxe decor – it had the best of both worlds. This boutique hotel had all the details of a five-star hotel but with a more personal touch. The only catch was the price.

Luckily for me, I booked my room at a discounted price through a Travelzoo coupon. At the time of booking, my room was $250 per night after taxes for the King Essential room. However, I decided to upgrade to the One Bedroom Suite complete with bathtub for only an extra $100. It was my birthday weekend so a bathtub upgrade was well worth it for me. As well, I was welcomed into my suite at the Kimpton with complimentary bottled water and two huge packs of cheesy dill popcorn. It felt like a promising stay already.

One Bedroom Suite

Decked out in retro-style decor and a homey feel, the Kimpton is the kind of hotel I love to stay in. I felt right at home as soon as I opened the doors to my One Bedroom Suite. Complete with kitchenette, living room space and a separate bedroom, the suite was spacious with all the coziest touches. Though I was only there for one night, it already felt like a nice home away from home.

I was pleasantly surprised by how roomy the suite was while only being a boutique hotel. Most boutique hotels have tiny rooms with even tinier bathrooms but this wasn’t the case at the Kimpton. If anything, the bathroom was the largest part of the space that I had trouble using it all for myself. The Kimpton Saint George was the perfect cross between a hotel and an Airbnb with its unique touches.

Kimpton Saint George Hotel record player

One of the first things I noticed at the Kimpton Saint George Hotel was an old school record player with a selection of records next to it. This was the first time I’d seen a real working record player in a hotel room. I was impressed by the unique addition, especially in the Yorkville area. Another reason why the Kimpton reminded me of an Airbnb home.

The record player was perfect for someone like myself who has a collection of records at home and in general, anyone who loves old school music players. Who doesn’t love retro-inspired decor? Sadly, I didn’t bring any of my own records when I stayed. Duly noted for next time!

How to Book the Bathtub Suite

As mentioned, the extra $100 I paid to get my own bathtub was worth every penny. When I saw the Kimpton’s gorgeous marble tub, my jaw dropped. It looked straight out of an Audrey Hepburn movie and I couldn’t wait to bath in it. The bathroom was already massive but with the separated tub, it completed the luxuriousness of the suite. This was by far the main attraction of the entire suite.

You can only book the bathtub with the One Bedroom Suites (or Presidential Suite) at the Kimpton Saint George. None of their standard King or Queen rooms have the bathtub as there isn’t any space for it. Happy to say I utilized the tub for all its worth by spending the whole night just soaking in it. It was a bit of a bummer that the hotel didn’t provide any bath bubbles though. The only thing better would’ve been soaking in a bubble bath as I listened to the low humming of a record playing in the back. Chef’s kiss.

My Birthday Treat

I should also mention that the staff at Kimpton Saint George Hotel were very hospitable throughout and made my stay extra special. They went above and beyond by being very attentive when mentioning it was my birthday upon booking. I loved the attention to detail and keeping in mind of the special occasion (complete with birthday note).

Overall, I appreciated the kindness they showed me from beginning to the end. Upon checking-in, the concierge wished me right away and proceeded to gift me the two packs of popcorn with a small complimentary bottle of wine. I was given a choice between red or white wine and went with the white. This was another first in any hotel to receive such a sweet birthday gift.

This was the first birthday in three years that I actually got to pamper myself. Being at the Kimpton Saint George really felt like a form of normalcy had been restored. That night, I put on my best birthday outfit which consisted of a square-neck body suit, my favourite pair of skinny jeans and pointed long boots to get the night started. It had been ages since I’d gotten a suite all to myself. This hotel stay signified the beginning of many more to come in the new year. Cheers to enjoying life again.

Would I Stay at the Kimpton Again?

One downside at the Kimpton was the bed. Though the size of bed was great, as I had it all to myself, I was wouldn’t say it was the comfiest mattress I’ve slept on. The Kimpton is also located on the very busy intersection of Bloor and St. George. If you’re sensitive to noise, try booking a room that doesn’t face the street directly. Because it is a smaller boutique hotel, the floors aren’t very high up and you can hear most of the bustle coming from the streets down below.

Other than being in a low-rise suite and not having the comfiest bed, I’d say the value of the room was well worth it. For the amount of space I had and having an entire night to enjoy the massive bathtub, I couldn’t have asked for a better stay. For anyone who loves to indulge in personable hotel living with great hospitality, I’d recommend the Kimpton Saint George. It was easily one of the more memorable staycations I’ve had in Toronto.

Another pleasant surprise at the Kimpton was finding out there was Wine Hour in the lobby at 5pm on the Friday that I checked-in. I’m unsure if this is something that happens daily but on that day, from the attendant on duty, you could get a glass of red or white while relaxing by the fireplace. It was super cozy being in the lobby with fellow hotel guests just enjoying wine time. It made for the perfect pre-drink before going out for a night on the town.

All in all, I was really happy with my stay at the Kimpton Saint George Hotel. The staff were all amazing and made me feel very special while celebrating my big day. I couldn’t believe it had been so long since staying in a hotel but it was just what I needed to feel like me again. If anything, I would stay again in the Kimpton Saint George just for that giant marble tub – with bubbles next time.
