What it’s Like to Visit a Lavender Farm During COVID

We all knew things would be a bit different when things reopened again. The same goes for all tourist attractions around the city such as the beloved lavender farms that are a summertime favourite. For those that love everything lavender – especially lavender ice cream – a lavender farm is a popular choice for a date with your beau or trip out of town with the girls. However, when reopening amid COVID, it definitely affects the experience a bit.

I’d never been to a lavender farm before so when my friend had extra tickets, I jumped on the opportunity to visit Terre Bleu Lavender Farm in Milton, Ontario. I’ve always been a bit obsessed with lavender for their calming effects and aromatic scent, so this to me was a must-see. However, getting tickets to the farm are now an exclusive process given to email subscribers only. Terre Blue will contact you directly for the opportunity to purchase tickets through their website and because the farm is only allowing limited capacity each day, they also assign a certain time slot for you.

Given how “exclusive” visiting this lavender farm felt, I decided to take advantage and go check it out. I also don’t mind that it was limited capacity, since that also means we’d be able to walk around the farm without fighting for space – especially when it comes to photos. I wore my nicest white jumpsuit for this special occasion. Knowing that there would be less people actually meant we’d get a much more peaceful experience, which was actually perfect. My friend and I made a girl date out of it and drove one hour out of the city to see this much talked about lavender farm that I’ve seen plastered all over my Instagram feed every summer. I couldn’t forget my reusable face mask though – you need it to enter the gift shop afterwards.

We were greeted upon arrival and given maps of the premises before going in. We’d bought the gift pack with the entry fee ($35) so we had a pint of lavender ice cream and lavender hand sanitizer waiting for us at the end. For those just wishing to visit, the standard adult fee is $20. I’d say the price of admission is quite pricey for what you actually get to see. It was definitely nothing like the experience you’d get pre-COVID; there were no guided tours or activities to partake in. We were only able to walk around the two large lavender fields – one which you see right as you enter and the other filled with the more vibrant-coloured lavender. The lavender fields were beautiful nonetheless but I guess I was expecting a much grander experience so to speak.

After spending about an hour at the main field, we realized we needed to find the iconic Yellow Door – the much adored and Instagram-famous art installation. It was a short hike through the Yellow Bench Trail to see this very popular door. Good thing most of the trail had a boardwalk though, which made walking in heeled sandals much easier. The trail also included – of course – a yellow bench, which kept to the theme of their outdoor art pieces. I’m still not sure the significance of the colour yellow but it looked beautiful against the backdrop in the forest. I learned later on that this was a 200-year cedar forest we were walking through. Too bad we came later in the day and didn’t have as much time to explore its 160 acres of farmland in full.

The field with the Yellow Door was definitely much more vibrant with their lavender plants a deeper shade of violet and just prettier in general. It made me regret spending so much more time at the main field – I’d recommend going straight to this field to get your fill of the Yellow Door right away. I’d seen previously that the door frame had script written at the top but when we went, it was missing. The quote on the door used to read: Walk through the door, your worries behind you, your joys ahead. I loved the meaning behind this piece of art. However, the dark clouds rolled right in at this point, which made all the photos we took at the lavender field from this point onwards quite dark. Then Milton was hit with a tornado afterwards – so safe to say, walking through the door didn’t exactly work that well for us.

Once we were ushered out of the lavender farm at closing time, we made sure to pick up our pint of lavender ice cream as part of our gift pack to go. We also got a complimentary bottle of lavender and strawberry sparkling water to enjoy on the way out, which was super refreshing after our walk through the farm. As a last stop, we also made sure to check out the gift shop filled with all things lavender – soap, candles, hand lotion and even lavender cheese just to name a few. I took home some lavender hot chocolate and soap as my two souvenirs for the day.

I’ve always loved buying lavender-scented everything as it helps in reducing my anxiety. At Terre Bleu, I loved being around all the lavender plants for this reason. As well, seeing all the lavender products they make right on their farm was pretty amazing. However, I will say the price of admission is very high just to “walk around” pre se but I’m all for supporting businesses that won’t be seeing as much business this year due to COVID so I would still recommend visiting if you can. It’s also a nice excuse to get out of the city by getting lost in a lavender farm for a bit. How can you resist the smell of fresh lavender along with a pretty photo op?
