It’s been 9 weeks now and the thing I was looking forward to the most before quarantine was getting my blonde hair redone. My balayage has grown out quite a bit since last year’s salon visit but my main concern has been how brassy my colour has gotten. Truth be told, I haven’t gone to the salon in almost year because of how expensive it’s gotten to bleach and tone my hair in recent years. Quite honestly, I must be out thousands (yes, thousands) since I first started colouring my hair 3 years ago.
However, my blonde balayage was in desperate need of a tune-up and I knew we wouldn’t be out by the time of my scheduled appointment. I definitely knew I needed to find a healthy alternative – and fast. Instead of using box dye like I had previously, I decided to find something that would be nourishing to my hair as well as return it to its ashy tone. I’ve heard many good things about Fanola hair products and decided to give it a try by ordering their No Yellow Shampoo and No Yellow Mask. After 8 weeks of using these products, I can safely say my blonde hair has been saved from a brassy disaster.
Upon first usage, I wasn’t even sure if I applied Fanolo’s No Yellow Shampoo correctly or if I used enough product. However, when I washed and dried it afterwards, I was shocked to see what a difference one wash of the No Yellow Shampoo did for me. Even when wet, I could tell how much lighter my hair looked after just a few minutes of having it on. When they say “No Yellow”, they really mean it. The highly pigmented violet shampoo took the brassy hues right out and neutralized it with a renewed ashy tone. I was ecstatic that I could’ve basically toned my hair at home this whole time instead for killer salon results.
I’ve been using purple shampoo consistently since going blonde but I’ve never noticed such a big difference from anything I’ve used prior. It says on the bottle that it’s recommended for grey, super-lightened or discoloured hair but it helps to lighten my darker strands just fine for a more refreshed look. I will note that this doesn’t act as a clarifying shampoo so you’ll definitely need to use a separate shampoo along with it to wash out grease and lingering residue. I’ve been currently using Hair Dance Intensive Hydrating Shampoo for a colour safe wash. Fanola’s shampoo is a very liquidy texture so it’s best used as a toner mainly. It says on the bottle to leave on damp hair for 5 minutes before washing out but you can always leave it in longer depending on how light you want to go.
I originally bought the Fanola No Yellow Mask with the shampoo as a bundle on Amazon thinking it could replace my purple conditioner. Although it does help to moisturize your hair after shampooing by restoring its smooth and shiny appearance, I feel it’s most useful as an extra step in achieving platinum status for your hair. The mask is made of an intensive blue pigment – think royal blue – that I’ve heard can make your hair silver if your hair’s light enough to begin with. Because my hair isn’t as light in colour, I like using it when I want something stronger to help take out the orange in my hair. This stuff is pretty much what blonde dreams are made of.
I made the mistake of using the mask while in the shower the first time. I learned it’s best to towel dry your hair after rinsing out Fanola’s No Yellow Shampoo and then apply the mask generously throughout your hair with disposable gloves. The deep blue pigment can stain your hands so gloves are highly recommended! It also directs us to leave the mask in only for a few minutes, which I’ve been doing. However, if you were to leave it in for much longer, I wouldn’t be surprised if you came out a couple shades lighter. Trust me, this stuff makes a huge tonal difference on your hair. After rinsing it out, I’d apply my usual Drybar’s Blonde Ale Brightening Conditioner to hydrate my damaged hair for one more wash. Some days I skip the mask but I’d recommend getting it with the shampoo for more drastic results.
After 2 months of usage, I can definitely foresee Fanola’s No Yellow hair products saving me loads of money on future salon visits. Although my blonde balayage has grown out significantly for the most part, I’ve been able to keep it looking healthy using these two life-saving products. Like I said, I already saw a notable difference after only one wash as if I’d just come back from the salon (picture above was taken after the 2 month mark). Just make sure you avoid using hot water on your beautiful blonde hair for best results!
After quarantine is done with, I’d only really want to touch up my balayage at the salon since the roots are growing out nicely and then keep using Fanola to tone, lighten and neutralize. Let’s be honest, this girl doesn’t have hundreds of dollars to shell out per salon visit anymore. The fact that I’m still getting compliments on my blonde coloured hair after a year must also be a good sign I’m doing something right.
