Why Muskoka is the Perfect “Me Time” Destination

For the second year in a row, I decided to plan a mini-getaway to Muskoka for my birthday weekend. Though the weather is never as warm as I’d like during this time of year, it’s always nice to take a breather and get out of the city for a bit. It’s a well-known fact that “me time” is very important to maintaining your mental well-being that this weekend trip was a no brainer for me. Although I traveled to Muskoka with my boyfriend, this road trip to cottage country was all about relaxation, self-care and indulging in life at a slower pace. When my birthday rolls around just at the beginning of spring, I’m ready for a complete restart and Muskoka gives me just that.

We arrived at Touchstone Spa on Lake Muskoka in the evening and immediately, I got a real sense of how secluded the surroundings were in this remote location. The resort itself sits right on the edge of Lake Muskoka, giving us a glorious view of nothing but nature. During our time there, we only saw a handful of other resort guests; the main vibe we got this time in Muskoka was complete quietness from the outside world and we weren’t complaining. My boyfriend and I treated ourselves to a spa treatment – rejuvenating facial for me and deep-tissue massage for him – while lying side by side. It was the perfect couples package for us with the backdrop of Lake Muskoka right outside our window.

Another thing I loved about our stay at Touchstone Resort was the privacy of the rooms. Instead of being housed in one big building, each room was designed with more of a townhouse feel featuring a shared balcony in the back. My boyfriend personally loved the BBQ set equipped with our rooms; we already plan to come back during the summertime to put it to good use. And of course, the view from our windows was the main selling point for choosing this resort. For those planning to visit, I’d highly recommend booking a room with a lake view. Although Lake Muskoka was still covered in snow when we went, it was still undeniably beautiful waking up to a snow-covered lake in the morning.

When one comes to Muskoka and Touchstone for that matter, the best thing to do is hands-down indulging in the outdoor hot tub. It was the first thing we did when we arrived in town and we also headed there once again right after our spa treatments for a second round. Truthfully speaking, I must have been to a hundred hot tubs and spas by now but this one, in particular, has been my favourite out of them all. Situated above Lake Muskoka, with the cold fresh air surrounding us, it made for the ultimate form of relaxation away from everything. Better yet, during our stay, there wasn’t a soul in sight during our hot tub time which means we got this place all to ourselves.

Pictured above is one of the relaxation rooms located at Touchstone Spa, that overlooks the lake. The windows are actually open in this particular room, which was amazing for a cool down period after our treatments. The spa also sits right above the infinity pool – the standout feature of this resort – which got me super excited just thinking about how amazing it would be during the summertime. Although it was nice to visit when the air was still frosty enough to sit in the hot tub comfortably, I’d want to come back to go canoeing on Lake Muskoka or to sunbathe on the surrounding decks and take a dip in the infinity pool. Muskoka is definitely known for their picturesque views and nothing spells “me time” more than a bit of self-pampering in the midst of nature.

Touchstone Resort is the perfect alternative to a cottage stay. For those needing a home away from home, this resort offers rooms equipped with kitchenettes and is a short drive to the small town of Bracebridge, where you can find local eats and bars with dirt cheap drinks. Pictured above, in my new favourite haven, is the hot tub of my dreams that sits right above Lake Muskoka. I believe I stayed here all by myself (my boyfriend had already decided to move on to the steam room) until I literally turned into a prune. It was extremely difficult to leave this breathtaking view – as one can imagine –  that I just decided to indulge in the healing waters as long as possible. Everyone needs to take a little time to slow down once in a while and I couldn’t imagine a better place to do it than in Muskoka.
