Unless you haven’t been paying attention, you’re probably well aware that holographic makeup is the beauty trend of the moment. From eyes to cheeks and lips, it’s become obvious that people have become obsessed with the idea of multi-dimensional makeup that changes colour depending on the direction of light, otherwise known as the ‘unicorn look’. Well, I’ve seen it pretty much everywhere this past season that I finally decided to try it out. There is quite a wide selection of holographic makeup out there to create this highly coveted prismatic look. After consulting with a few of the top beauty blogs, I decided to test out some of the most recommended ones I could find.
I tend to use darker palettes with nude and pastel tones for my lids so when I tried out Kat Von D’s Alchemist Holographic Palette ($44), it was an entirely different look for me. There were four shades in the palette (green, blue, pink and ultra-violet) but after testing all of them, I found the green-emerald to be the most highly pigmented. You can also use these shadows over other products as transformers but I tried them on its own to see what kind of illuminating effect they could take. Out of all the colours, I liked the ultra-violet-amethyst on my skin the most. However, depending on where the light is positioned, it’s hard to differentiate one from the other once applied. For this look, I used the ultra-violet as the base colour and blended the other three to add dimension. Overall, I found the powders in this palette very luminous but because of my fair complexion, it would be best applied over darker tones to bring out their full holographic effects.
My favourite out of the three holographic makeup products that I tried is the Milk Makeup Holographic Stick in Supernova ($34). It has a nice creamy texture to it that glided over the apples of my cheeks silky smooth and I liked how easy the application was. The formula also felt very moisturizing on the skin, unlike other powdered highlighters out there. It’s mainly used on the face and cheeks but could also be easily used as a cream eyeshadow for a nice iridescent look. The only downside was even though I really liked the product, no matter how many applications, it didn’t show up on my cheeks as much as I’d like. It worked well as a subtle highlighter to give my skin that extra glow but in pictures, it didn’t make much of a difference to achieve the holographic look.
For my lips, I used Too Faced Melted Latex in Unicorn Tears ($25). Out of all three products, it made the biggest impact in looking like a real-life unicorn. Again, you could layer this lip gloss on top of another lipstick or lip colour – I used it as is to see how it would turn out on its own. I really liked how it transformed my lips with its multi-dimensional glitter and metallic effect. It gave them a range of colours from blue to pink to purple and back to white again. It was also very moisturizing and gave me a nice full pout, which I didn’t mind at all. Overall, the holographic look is a great makeup trend that can take your look to the next level but on my fair skin tone, I found that it washed me out instead of bringing out my features. And unless you want to look like a sparkly alien 24/7, I would save it for special occasions only.

Ooo it looks so lovely!! I love the shimmer on your lips. Would this be something that you would wear on an everyday occasion? Or is it too colourful for your style? I personally like the colours but can’t see myself wearing it. I’m an old lady lol
Thank you! I wouldn’t wear it everyday as it doesn’t complement my skin tone that well but I would definitely try it out for a more theatrical look for special occasions!
Wow I didn’t know that was starting to be a trend. Thanks 🙂
