It’s no joke Winter is harsh on your hair – but taking care of colored hair in winter time is another story. The cold temperatures are sure to make your hair rough and brittle with split ends galore. Luckily for me, I’ve been able to maintain the smoothness in my hair while keeping my color in check with the help of some easy products. Since receiving a lot of compliments on my hair lately, I’ve decided to share my simple hair routine on the blog. Most people don’t know that I’ve had my hair bleached three times in the past year and a half. I’ve loved the results every time but it took me a while to learn how to take proper care of damaged hair. Having colored hair is definitely a fun way to play around with your look but every time I’d go back to the salon, it would look so completely dry and worn out. Since bleaching it a third time a few months ago, I started maintaining a regular routine and I’ve seen a noticeable difference in the texture of my colored hair – it’s so much smoother from a year ago. Here are the 4 products I use on my colored hair!
Firstly, all colored hair should never be shampooed with products containing any stripping chemicals. Look for shampoos used to extend the longevity of your hair color – regular generic shampoos just won’t do. I recently switched over to Theorie Purple Sage Brightening Shampoo ($19.99) to maintain the luminosity in my ashy blonde hair. I’ve gone noticeably lighter in the past year and needed something specifically targeted for blonde hair types to lock in the color for as long as possible. I’d highly recommend this purple shampoo for hair that’s been bleached as many times as mine has. It’s been three months since my last salon visit and my color has definitely faded out. However, the ends have kept their blonde tones with the help of Theorie’s color-repair formula. It not only helps to maintain the color of my blonde locks but also has ingredients to help prevent split ends. The main one being butterfly pea flower, which is known to strengthen and thicken hair for a healthier mane.
I’ll admit that prior to coloring my hair, I never prioritized conditioning it. However, over the past year I’ve come to realize how important a good conditioner is in maintaining your color. It’s definitely the most important step in replenishing moisture to your hair and repairing the dry texture. After being done with another conditioner I’d been using, I recently discovered Caviar Infinite Color Hold Conditioner ($40) and haven’t turned back since. I use it every time I shampoo my hair, which is around every 2-3 days. The first time I ever used it, I knew right away this was amazing product – it glided onto my ends silky smooth, making my colored hair buttery soft. Not to mention it smells like a dream; once you wash it off, the scent of red raspberry stays on until the next day. Caviar’s conditioner main ingredient is the caviar extract, which helps to smooth out your hair and keep its shine. After a few months of using this product, I can’t rave enough of how soft my hair feels again.
My favourite step in taking care of my colored hair is treating it with L’Oréal’s Extraordinary Oil Penetrating Oil ($11.49) twice daily. I’ve consistently used this product for almost a year now and it honestly saves lives. A year ago, my hair was majorly dehydrated and looked the part. This deep penetrating oil has since returned my hair to its soft and luscious state. I usually pump two dollops of the oil into my palm and thoroughly run it through my hair until a noticeable sheen results. I’m looking to try more organic products as well but if you’re looking for a quick fix, this product does the trick; it instantly transforms your dry strands into smooth and moisturized ones with a non-greasy finish. As well, I was constantly picking my split ends after my dye job but a few months of this oil daily has taken care of that problem. One of my friends recently commented in surprise that I have no split ends for someone with colored hair. Thanks to this hair oil, it’s taken better care of my ends by smoothing them out and getting rid of unwanted breakage.
Lastly, the best way to make your colour last is by not washing your hair at all – or for at least as long as you can. Prior to bleaching my hair, I used to wash it every single day. However, anyone with colored hair knows that will kill your colour faster than the time it took to dye it. Now, I try to wash it every 3 days or longer, which is all made possible with my favourite – Dove Volume Dry Shampoo ($8.99). This stuff will easily diminish all the greasiness in your unwashed hair with just a few sprays. It’s easy to use and will help add volume back to your flat hair. Make sure to comb it out afterwards as sometimes it leaves a white residue if applied too much. Another pro tip for having healthier looking hair is by using a round brush when blow drying it out. Trust me, it makes a difference as it smooths out all the kinks and adds a luminous finish afterwards. With winter only starting to freeze over, you’ll need all the help you can get to maintain your colored hair!

Love your latest post Michelle! Quick addition to your points about the caviar shampoo! I love using their line as well! The best part is that they are free of sls and other parabens. I also noticed a huge difference in my hair since I started using this line – less greasy, less dry and overall healthier looking!
Thanks so much! Looks like you know more about the Caviar line than I do hahah 😋 I still have to try their shampoo but if it’s anything like their conditioner, I’m in! I definitely feel a difference in the texture of my hair since using it – it’s been looking the healthiest since I coloured it!
